How laser cutting, engraving, and marking works

Laser Cutting

The term laser stands for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. Light particles (called photons) are excited with current causing them to emit energy in the form of light. This light forms the laser beam.

Laser cutting is a thermal separation process, which means that the heat from the laser beam cuts through the material.

Laser Engraving

During the process of laser engraving, the laser beam strikes the material, exposing it to a great deal of heat. Depending on the exposure time, the color changes and creates a contrast, or the material evaporates or burns. The resulting laser engraving is permanent.

Laser Marking

Lasers can be used to create a mark on some materials. When a laser’s beam comes into contact with an item its’ light energy is converted into heat energy which creates a mark either by melting, ablation, carbon migration or chemical reaction. For metal, glass and ceramic marking we utilize a coating, that is applied by airbrush, to create a chemical reaction for a permanent laser mark. Glass is etched directly by shattering small areas of the glass.
